Long-term, open-ended therapy is ideal for healing past trauma. It’s great to take the time to unpick what went wrong and why you reacted the way you did. After all, knowledge is power and could help you avoid repeating old patterns in future relationships. Divorce can be painful; it’s essentially a big ball of grief and loss, and you really don’t want to experience it twice.

Often in divorce, you don’t have the luxury of taking your time to work out what went wrong. The therapeutic unpicking must be done another day. Action is required: healthy co-parenting needs to be established asap. A new home may be needed, or at least half of your family possessions replaced. Practical and legal decisions need to be made, and it can be helpful to have another person encouraging you along the process.

Therapy coaching combines both modalities, encouraging action and the setting of future-oriented goals alongside reflection and processing the past.

When action and solution-focused therapy is required, a therapeutic divorce coach might be needed.
